Recently my cat became anxious and depressed after a difficult period moving house. He began to spay around the house, scratch at carpets and furniture, and was prone to biting and scratching. This was very out of character for my little friend, who has always been very well behaved.

After consulting my local veterinarian, we were advised to try a product called Feliway. Feliway is a synthetic copy of a feline pheromone, which is used by cats to ascertain that their territory is safe and secure. It is available in two forms: an electric diffuser and a spray.
I applied the spray to areas where my cat was urinating to help alleviate his anxieties. One thing I will say about this spray is that it is fast acting, it made an enormous difference to his well-being. My cat was much more affectionate initially after the spray.I think Feliway is probably best as a short term "quick-fix" than a long term treatment.

I would say for a household with one cat with its own anxiety issues, that Feliway works very well. But it is always advisable to consult your veterinarian before attempting a product such as Feliway, as there may be an underlying problem which may need to be treated in a different way.
