Teach Your Puppy to Love Water

The earlier we expose puppies to water the easier it will become an accepted part of their world. As soon as you bring him home you should begin introducing your puppy to the concept of water. This will make bath time a pleasure rather than a chore and open the door to so many fun activities you can both share.
This also works with older dogs that, for some reason, have developed a fear of water. With patience and gentle coaxing we can change their attitudes.

Start with a small container of water and encourage your puppy to get his feet wet. Gradually sprinkle the water on him but if he shows an aversion, don’t push it. Try again another time. If the weather is particularly cold, be kind and use warm or tepid water.
You can also show your puppy by example. Stand in a shallow pool and tempt him to join you with treats.
Let your puppy see you using the hose. Lay it on the grass and let it trickle. Coax your puppy closer and lift the hose a little so he can see the water trickling from it. Do this a few times until he is at ease with it, then gradually increase the flow and the height that you hold it.

If your dog has a fear of rain, let him see you outside enjoying it. Take him out and do something fun; take him for a walk, play a game, give him a treat. Show him that the rain is harmless and can actually be a good experience.
In time your dog will not only accept water as part of his life, he may come to see it as an exciting and pleasurable activity.
