Recycle Mobile Phones for Animal Charities
It’s time to dig out the old mobile phone and put it to good use by raising money for animal charities.

According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
Communications 2011-2012 series of research reports 92% of Australians over the age of 18 use a mobile phone. This number is probably not surprising when you look around you and see people on phones anytime, anywhere. But what is surprising is that from 2011 to 2012, there were approximately 8.7 million new smartphone users.
This number is important because it means that there could be millions of unused mobile phones stored away in cabinets and drawers across Australia. Aussie Recycling Program (ARP) offers a safe and convenient way to recycle our mobile phone while raising money for charity.
The process is easy. You can download a form from the website which allows you to nominate your charity of choice from the participating charities or you can contact participating charities directly to obtain a pre-paid satchel to mail your phone. Drop off collection points are also available in selected areas. With many Australians upgrading their phone every 18-24 months, this is such an easy way to help the environment and raise money for charity.
And for comparison sake- if you have looked into any of the services that will pay you for your old phones in most cases the choice to donate is much more attractive. I checked the price that I could be paid for an older model Blackberry Bold and was quoted $5.00. This was from a for-profit company that was going to either on-sell or recycle my phone (selling whatever parts they could). Alternatively, ARP will do the same but will also support charities with much needed funds. Personally, I won’t miss the $5 and I certainly won’t miss the old phone clutter. But to a charity that support animals, $5 can go a long way to supporting vital projects.
I have recently posted my phone off to ARP in support of the
Animal Welfare League of Queensland . Other participating charities include Adelaide Zoo, RSPCA, Taronga Zoo and many more.
So why not get started clearing out the clutter to help animals in need? You can even host a collection drive at your work, school or neighbourhood.
