Indian Runner Ducks

Indian Runners are the cutest of ducks -often described as a "wine bottle" looking duck.


They have a very upright stance and quite a funny walk, or run unlike other ducks who "waddle".


When I had these, they were fascinating and I could sit and watch their antics for ages.


They are not an easy duck to find -and it took us a while to actually find a breeder where we could buy any. We bought two females as I wanted the eggs to eat.

The eggs taste very similar to chicken eggs but they are larger and are great to cook with also. Indian Runners are good layers and will lay between about 150 to 250 eggs per year.

These ducks do not fly and if left to their own devices do not form nests and incubate their own eggs.

They run or walk, often dropping their eggs wherever they happen to be. We used to keep them locked up sometimes till they laid their eggs as on acreage it was sometimes impossible to find their eggs otherwise.


They, like other ducks need to be locked up at night to be protected against foxes -we had them in with the llamas as llamas make very good guard animals.

Indian Runners like water, as do all water birds, and we were fortunate to have a lake on one side of the house where they swam -sometimes with the other ducks we had.


They are easy to keep and look after and eat worms and snails as well as grass.


It was a delight having these ducks on our property and I would recommend them to anyone who is in a position to have them as pets.
